  • Qantas' cabin crew are forced to work for 12-14 hours a day, reducing their rest timings.
  • As a result, they have decided to withdraw from operations for 24 hours, protesting extended work hours and urging for a pay rise.

Cabin crew members of the Australian airline company Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) have threatened to strike, as a protest against extended shift timings.

Qantas' employees have unanimously voted for industrial action after they were forced by the company to work for longer shift hours with reduced rest times. As a result, cabin crews have determined to withdraw from their duty for up to 24 hours. This could have a significant impact on the operation of the airlines, causing delays and cancellations as well. However, the date of the operation withdrawal has not been announced yet.

The operation withdrawal by Qantas' cabin crew might disturb Christmas travel plans for many.

On 23 November 2022, Teri O'Toole, the federal secretary of the Flight Attendants' Association of Australia (FAAA), said that the primary objective of this strike is to urge Qantas' management to reconsider the cabin crew shift extensions. The newly proposed cabin crew shift forces them to work for 12-14 hours a day rather than a standard shift hour of 9.45 hours.

The proposal laid down by the cabin crew not only demands to renegotiate the shift hours but also urges for a 3% annual pay rise and access to over AU$7000 in bonus payments. In addition to that, the cabin crew of Qantas are also in line to receive 1000 shares of around AU$6000.
