Biome Australia (ASX:BIO) has reached a significant milestone in its ongoing research efforts, completing key steps in the intellectual property journey for its probiotic strain, Lactobacillus plantarum BMB18. This breakthrough marks a strategic point for ASX consumer stock Biome Australia, advancing its research and commercial potential in the probiotic and health sector. The strain's development journey included identification, commercial validation, and early-stage characterization, with formal registration completed at DSMZ, the German culture bank specializing in microbiological research.
As Biome prepares to secure the intellectual property (IP) for BMB18, the company follows through on a December 2023 agreement with one of its R&D partners. This collaborative agreement will ensure that IP rights for BMB18 are transferred to Biome, reinforcing the company’s expanding portfolio of proprietary probiotic strains. This ownership is expected to enable Biome to pioneer product innovation within the probiotic health market.
The next steps in Biome’s IP program include external characterisation, a process essential for assessing the strain's potential applications and benefits. This characterisation will further define BMB18’s features and guide Biome’s future R&D strategies. The company's milestone achievements with BMB18 represent a robust foundation for future product development, potentially fostering growth across various health-related sectors.
Biome's founder and managing director, Blair Vega Norfolk, highlighted the milestone as a significant advancement for the company, underscoring the value of proprietary strains in driving long-term business development. “This is a major step forward for Biome in the growth and development of the business with the further ownership of probiotic intellectual property. This new strain, BMB18, is an incredible opportunity for long-term product innovation and diversification into new health areas," he remarked.
With IP ownership, Biome is poised to drive product diversification and develop a robust R&D pipeline. The BMB18 strain is projected to create value for Biome as it explores novel health applications and develops new listed medicines in the probiotic space.
After the announcement, Biome shares experienced a slight decline. At 10:29 AEDT, Biome's stock was trading at 66 cents, reflecting a 1.49% decrease since the market opening.
Biome’s IP milestone not only advances the company’s capabilities in strain development but also positions it to expand its footprint in the competitive field of probiotics. With a clear pathway to commercialization, Biome aims to leverage BMB18 for sustained growth and innovative product offerings in the health sector.
