Lumos Diagnostics, a leader in rapid point-of-care testing technologies, has recently announced the expansion of its partnership with Hologic Inc., a global powerhouse in women's health. The collaboration focuses on developing an advanced fetal fibronectin (fFN) test, a diagnostic tool instrumental in identifying the risk of premature birth. As part of this endeavor, Lumos secures its role in innovating an on-market test exclusively manufactured by Hologic via two strategic agreements valued above US$14 million.
Building upon an intellectual property agreement worth US$10 million, Lumos is set to receive US$4.7 million through a development agreement. The core thrusts are to integrate the fFN test with Lumos's proprietary reader platform and to enrich connectivity options significantly. This expansion brings to light the company's strategic growth in the arena of women's health diagnostics.
Phased Development Strategy
The development project is structured into three pivotal phases, aimed at bringing an innovative, feature-rich product to market by late 2025. Kicking off with Phase 1, the project provides a baseline for defining product parameters and delineating a comprehensive project roadmap, concluded in May 2024 with a substantial payment.
Moving forward, Phase 2 tackles assay feasibility to ensure the capability of biomarker detection. With an early milestone already achieved in September 2024, the phase remains on track for completion by April 2025. This sets the stage for Phase 3, earmarked for delivering a highly anticipated system prototype.
Innovative System Prototyping
Phase 3 carries particular importance as it encompasses refining the Lumos reader technology with enhanced hardware attributes. This effort not only underscores Hologic's commitment to creating cutting-edge women’s health solutions, but also reflects Lumos's dedication to technological excellence.
The forecasted completion by December 2025, alongside the additional work scope, pushes the total agreement value up to US$5.5 million. As the project unfolds, it represents a promising leap in healthcare advancements, fostering proactive measures against premature births.
Promising Future Collaborations
Doug Ward, Managing Director at Lumos, expressed satisfaction with the progression of this collaborative project. Highlighting the ongoing advancements, he anticipates that Phase 2 will conclude timely, thus paving the way for a state-of-the-art product launch. The collective vision shared with Hologic propels this project toward creating a highly valuable healthcare solution, resonant with the market's evolving needs.
