  • UQ and QRC partner to offer immersive engineering camp
  • Camp projects include autonomous vehicle and emergency services design

A group of Year 10 students from across Queensland are diving into the world of mining and engineering through a unique, hands-on program hosted at the University of Queensland (UQ). The three-day Oresome Engineering Camp, jointly organised by UQ and the Queensland Resources Council’s Minerals and Energy Academy, is offering an early glimpse into the opportunities within Australia’s booming resources sector.

The camp is designed to immerse students in real-world engineering challenges that are shaping the future of mining. Guided by UQ academics and professionals from the mining industry, participants are working on projects that simulate actual scenarios, including the design of autonomous mining trucks and emergency services vehicles.

Mansfield State High School student Yasiru Wijesooriya reflected on the experience, highlighting the hands-on nature of the camp. From constructing model vehicles to collaborating with peers who share similar interests, students are developing practical skills while also getting inspired about future career pathways.

The camp not only allows students to explore the technical side of mining engineering but also helps them envision their potential academic paths. Engaging directly with university staff and industry mentors provides clarity and motivation, particularly for students keen to pursue STEM-related fields after school.

Professor Ross McAree, Head of UQ’s School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering, emphasized the significance of such initiatives. According to McAree, experiences like these empower students to understand the diversity and impact of engineering careers, especially in the dynamic resources sector that continues to innovate with automation and sustainable practices.

This initiative aligns with broader industry trends where mining companies such as BHP Group Ltd (ASX:BHP) are integrating advanced technologies and automation to enhance operations. Programs like the Oresome Engineering Camp help bridge the gap between education and industry by showcasing the real-world applications of classroom learning.

As companies featured in the ASX 100 share price index continue to shape the future of mining and energy in Australia, this kind of early engagement is crucial for building the skilled workforce of tomorrow.

By fostering curiosity and practical skills among school students, Queensland’s educational and mining sectors are laying strong foundations for the next generation of engineers ready to contribute to Australia's innovation-driven mining future.
