- $1.4B Mardie project gets federal approval
- Set to become Australia’s largest salt producer
- First new salt operation in over 30 years
A significant step forward has been made in Australia’s industrial resources sector, as BCI Minerals' $1.4 billion Mardie Salt and Potash Project has received federal environmental approval. Located in Western Australia's Pilbara region, this large-scale initiative marks the country’s first new salt project in more than 30 years.
BCI Minerals (ASX:BCI), backed by Kerry Stokes, will now advance to full-scale operations. The Mardie project is designed to extract salt and potash from seawater using solar evaporation methods — a process aligned with sustainable and renewable energy practices. This development is set to position the company as a major player on the global stage, with the site expected to deliver up to 5.35 million tonnes of industrial salt annually. This production level not only makes Mardie the largest salt operation in Australia but also places it as the third largest worldwide.
The project stands out for its use of modern technology to deliver high-purity salt that plays a crucial role in a wide array of industrial and manufacturing processes. Salt derived from this operation will serve as a raw material for numerous everyday products, such as chemicals, textiles, glass, and pharmaceuticals.
David Boshoff, managing director of BCI Minerals, emphasized the importance of Mardie in the broader industrial supply chain, noting the increasing demand for reliable and high-quality salt sources. He highlighted the company’s role in bringing state-of-the-art production capabilities to a traditionally low-tech sector.
In addition to salt, the Mardie project will also produce sulphate of potash, a premium fertiliser essential for agriculture. This dual-product approach not only diversifies BCI Minerals’ (ASX:BCI) revenue potential but also strengthens its position in both the industrial and agribusiness sectors.
Strategically located with direct access to the Indian Ocean, the Mardie project benefits from ideal solar evaporation conditions and efficient logistics routes, making it a competitive export hub for Asia-Pacific markets.
With construction well underway and federal backing secured, the Mardie project signals a new era for Australian industrial mineral production. It stands as a testament to long-term planning, innovation in extraction technology, and growing global demand for reliable sources of essential industrial materials.
