After a remarkable six-year journey at the helm of Cicada Innovations, Sally-Ann Williams has announced her decision to step down as Chief Executive Officer of Australia’s leading deep tech incubator. The move comes at a pivotal moment, as the organisation celebrates its 25th anniversary, marking a legacy of scientific and technological advancement.
The board of Cicada Innovations has already initiated the process to identify a new leader. In the meantime, the company’s seasoned executive team will oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring continuity as the transition unfolds.
A Legacy of Impact and Scale
Under Williams’ strategic leadership, Cicada Innovations evolved into a formidable national asset in Australia’s innovation landscape. Ventures supported by the incubator during her tenure have collectively raised more than $6.1 billion in funding, with over $1.3 billion in exits. These figures underscore the critical role Cicada plays in accelerating high-impact scientific and technological breakthroughs.
A key highlight of this growth phase was the establishment of new innovation hubs, including the Jumar Bioincubator in Melbourne and the HealthTech Hub at Westmead. These additions significantly enhanced the incubator’s national footprint and strengthened its role in supporting biotech and health-focused startups.
Moreover, Cicada also launched the National Space Industry Hub—backed by strategic stakeholders—offering support to over 80 early-stage companies aiming to disrupt the aerospace sector. In another strategic move, Cicada acquired Tech23, Australia’s largest deep tech showcase event, further cementing its position as a catalyst for next-generation innovation.
Strengthening National and Industry Ties
During Williams’ tenure, partnerships across government, academia, and industry flourished. Collaborations were built with entities like NSW Health and global innovators such as CSL (ASX:CSL), positioning Cicada as a connector of bold ideas and real-world impact. These cross-sector alliances were instrumental in nurturing a sustainable innovation ecosystem and directly align with the ambitions of high-growth ASX200 today.
Reflections and Future Direction
In her parting message, Williams reflected on the privilege of leading Cicada and the shared success of the organisation, its partners, and founders. Her departure opens a new chapter for Cicada, with the incoming leadership poised to build upon a strong foundation and a culture of innovation.
Board Chair Katherine Woodthorpe acknowledged the pivotal role Williams played in Cicada’s growth, calling her tenure transformative and essential to the company’s emergence as a national deep tech powerhouse.
As Cicada enters this next phase, its legacy of enabling science-backed startups continues to ripple across Australia’s innovation economy—especially in sectors driving forward the ASX200.
