  • Growing impact of Chinese-made cars in Australia

The Australian electric vehicle (EV) market is undergoing a major transformation, and BYD (HKG:1211) is emerging as a standout name leading the shift. Eagers Automotive (ASX:APE), Australia’s largest car dealership group, has expressed high confidence in the longevity and quality of BYD vehicles, following extensive visits to the company’s manufacturing and R&D facilities in China.

Eagers CEO Keith Thornton shared these insights during the company’s annual meeting, underscoring how BYD's innovation and scale are driving its performance in the Australian market. With 16% of all new cars sold in Australia now originating from China—trailing only Japan and Thailand—Chinese car brands are becoming increasingly influential. Thornton also noted that many of these companies receive strong backing from the Chinese government, adding another layer of stability.

This faith in BYD's growth prospects is reflected in a new five-year retail agreement with Eagers. While the partnership is not exclusive, Thornton indicated that the number of other potential BYD retail partners in Australia would be limited. Notably, BYD has already overtaken Tesla in terms of EV sales in the country, showing that Australian consumers are increasingly embracing alternative EV options.

During the meeting, Thornton humorously referenced vintage Holdens still running in Brisbane and wondered if BYD’s vehicles could stand the test of time in the same way. The implication is clear: quality and longevity are key factors for sustained success in a competitive automotive market.

This growing momentum in the EV sector ties into broader investment trends, particularly within the S&P/ASX200. As Australia’s top companies look to capitalise on sustainable innovation, the rise of global EV brands could influence automotive and tech-related equities. Investors may also keep an eye on long-term growth opportunities in sectors tied to clean energy and vehicle tech.

For those tracking reliable returns, ASX dividend stocks continue to appeal. While BYD itself is listed in Hong Kong, companies like Eagers, part of the ASX ecosystem, may offer exposure to these evolving trends while contributing to dividend-focused portfolios.

As Australia’s vehicle landscape continues to evolve, BYD’s expanding footprint and support from major local partners suggest the EV revolution is only gaining speed—potentially reshaping the ASX200 outlook for years to come.
