Crude oil rises as European Union plans to ban Russian oil imports

Source: Copyright © 2022 Kalkine Media®
Crude oil prices extended their rally on Tuesday morning after climbing more than US$3/bbl on Monday. The significant rise in crude oil prices has been witnessed after the news that some European Union members are considering options to impose sanctions on Russian oil and as attacks on Saudi oil facilities sent fears through the market.
Both oil benchmarks settled nearly 7% higher on Monday as the potential for more supply disruptions weighed on the market. The prices moved higher ahead of talks this week between the US President Joe Biden and European Union governments in a series of summits that aim to harden the West's response to Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
Both oil benchmarks settled above US$109/bbl on Monday. WTI Crude Oil futures settled for US$109.97/bbl while Brent Crude Oil futures closed at US$115.62 on Monday.

ASX 200 to rise; US bond yields rally on Fed's rate comments
The Australian share market is expected to rise on Tuesday despite muted overnight closing on Wall Street after US Federal Reserve said that inflation was too high, and it could use bigger-than-usual interest rate hikes if needed.
The ASX 200 could be helped by gains in local energy stocks as European Union nations mulled over a Russian oil ban, while mining stocks could rise on firm commodity prices.
According to the latest SPI futures, the ASX 200 is expected to open 78 points or 1.05% higher. Meanwhile, Atlas Arteria Group (ASX:ALX) and health supplements company Blackmores Ltd (ASX:BKL) are a few stocks which are scheduled to go ex-dividend today.
On Wall Street, the Dow Jones fell 0.58%, the S&P 500 ended flat%, and the Nasdaq closed down 0.40%.
Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that the US central bank could raise rates in 50 basis point increments at upcoming meetings and leave rates higher in the longer term than would have traditionally been expected. "The labor market is very strong, and inflation is much too high," Powell told a National Association for Business Economics conference.
Fed recently hiked rates by 25 basis points for the first time in three years to tame a 40-year high in inflation.
