A new e-mail phishing scam has been identified by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Services Australia. Fake e-mail claiming to be from ‘myGov’, containing screenshots of the ‘myGovID’ app, is circulating amongst citizens.
‘myGovID’ is an app used to prove identity while accessing online services of the government. The mail asks individuals to click on a link for identity verification, using a “secure form”. It then takes them to a fake ‘myGov’ page, requesting personal info and bank details.
According to Ben Foster (ATO Assistant Commissioner), the e-mail contains classic illicit warning signs, asking for detailed confirmation. He clarified that ATO and ‘myGov’ do not send any e-mails or SMS messages with hyperlinks directing users to a login page for online services.

ATO expects more of such malicious attempts as tax time nears. ATO thus has issued warnings to alert everyone and ensure the online safety of citizens.
Phishing attempts have become more refined, and people need to be wary of them. Hank Jongen, GM- Services Australia, requested people to not click on any such links in any suspicious e-mails. He also asked victimised citizens to change their ‘myGov’ password and contact their bankers if any banking details were shared.
