Lithium Universe Limited (ASX: LU7) has announced the completion of two environmental field studies at its proposed refinery site at the Bécancour Waterfront Industrial Park (BWIP), Québec.
Hatch Ltd conducted the environmental field study for the company, which plans to continue the wetland surveys through June and July.
Results of the environmental surveys
The survey, adhering to provincial protocols, reported that the short-eared owl, a species of concern, has not been found in the Lot 22 area. The site lies near the railway, highway, and the CEPSA chemical plant, which might make it less attractive for this species.
Further, a recent breeding bird survey found that Chimney Swifts might inhabit structures away from Lot 22. Chimney Swifts are a species at risk and known to nest in human structures. The survey found no presence of salamanders or the least bittern bird, indicating that no additional surveys are required for these species.
Wetland delineation, adhering to provincial guidelines, reported no unexpected results, aligning with the desktop review information. Wetlands generally lie in the eastern and norther portions of the site, with smaller patches in the southwestern sector. These wetlands might be of low ecological value, characterised by agricultural ditches and the presence of the invasive species Phragmites australis.
