Highlights

  • A rise in Omicron cases has thrown new year celebration plans into absolute chaos.
  • Various nations have imposed lockdowns and travel bans.
  • You can still have a safe new year party by taking certain cautions.

With new year knocking on the doors, one thing bothering everyone is how safe it is to celebrate amid growing Omicron fears.

With a rapid surge in COVID-19 cases around Europe, the United States and Asia, many nations are on high alert. Many countries are gearing up for providing booster doses to maximise the protection level. Several countries have closed their international borders and re-imposed social distancing measures. To add up, there have been lockdowns and travel bans in some regions. Certainly, new year celebrations would not be the same as you had planned.

Good news for Aussies

In an emergency cabinet meeting last week, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison eliminated the possibility of the lockdown stating that hospitals were dealing well with COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant. Morrison stressed that the only way to stop the virus from spreading is for people to take personal responsibility.

Make the greatest use of technology and keep your invitations digital. You can either mail or use any social media platform to send out invitations instead of meeting everyone personally and increasing the risk of infection.

Get yourself tested for COVID-19 before the celebrations begin. Also, do get a booster dose if available. It will provide you a greater protection against COVID-19 as well as reduce the risk of passing it to someone else. As the newly emerged Omicron variant is highly transmissible, there’s a need to prep up well to ensure your safety against the infection.

One of the best ways to lower the risk of COVID-19 infection is to follow social distancing norms as well as other safety protocols when outdoors. Keep your gatherings small and limit the number of guests you are inviting.

Having an outdoor party can be a safer option as the infection spreads quickly in closed indoor spaces. In an indoor party, the air inside the home is regulated in a way that everyone breathes other people’s exhaled air.

If you are having an indoor party, open your windows and have good ventilation to keep fresh air circulating throughout the home. Make sure you arrange dining in the biggest room of your home. Give hygiene instructions to your family members and guests, such as coughing or sneezing in the elbow, wearing masks, and using sanitisers. Try to serve hot drinks infused with herbs which have immunity benefits.

With all the risk factors and restrictions being imposed, new year can still be joyful if planned thoughtfully. Have a safe new year!
