Marimaca Copper expands exploration at Pampa Medina Norte following recent drilling outcomes
New drillhole SMD-01 intersects copper-titanium mineralisation, enhancing geological understanding
Visual copper findings from further drilling indicate complex sulphide and oxide formations
Marimaca Copper Ltd (ASX:MC2), listed on the ASX 200 index, is progressing its exploration activities in the base metals sector, specifically at the Pampa Medina Norte Project in northern Chile. The ongoing expansion follows recent diamond drilling results at drillhole SMD-01, located within the extended zone of the Pampa Medina deposit.
Noteworthy Results From Initial Diamond Drilling
Drillhole SMD-01 marked the company's first deep diamond drill initiative at this northern extension, building upon previous reverse circulation drilling efforts. The drillhole delivered intervals showing copper-titanium mineralisation at varying depths, aligning with and affirming earlier shallow drilling outcomes. These findings contribute to refining the interpretation of lithological units within the broader manto-hosting geological structure. While the company has reported the lengths and characteristics of these intersections, it has stated that true widths are still being determined.
Pending Assays and Further Drillhole Insights
The complete assay results for SMD-01, especially from its deeper sections extending to final depths, are currently awaited. In parallel, Marimaca has drilled two more diamond holes, with SMD-02 being of particular interest. Positioned south of SMD-01, SMD-02 has reportedly intersected visible copper mineralisation within the upper manto. Additionally, polymetallic features have been observed deeper within a metasedimentary unit, suggesting a stratified mineral system.
Sample analysis and preparation from SMD-02 is ongoing. The company anticipates sharing those outcomes once the laboratory process is complete.
Strategic Implications for the Broader Project
Vice President of Exploration Sergio Rivera noted that the geological structures observed in these drillholes enhance the overall understanding of the subsurface copper systems. Observations include both bornite and chalcopyrite mineralisation, which have appeared within sulphide layers beneath the established oxide zones.
These developments carry geological importance for Marimaca’s flagship oxide deposit, situated nearby. The current preliminary economic assessment aims to evaluate integration strategies between the new sulphide-bearing zones and the already defined oxide leachable mantos.
Copper Demand Trends Strengthen Sector Outlook
Global copper demand is on a steady upward trend, underpinned by its growing application in areas such as industrial electrification, AI-driven infrastructure, and energy grid expansion. According to recent data from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, consumption is expected to accelerate year-over-year through the end of the decade. These demand dynamics contribute to broader momentum within the ASX 200 mining cohort, where companies such as Marimaca Copper Ltd (ASX:MC2) are actively shaping new exploration narratives across key resource markets.
