Evion Group NL (ASX:EVG) earns EU Strategic Project designation for Maniry graphite operation in Madagascar
Status granted under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, supporting regulatory and funding pathways
Vertical integration continues with operations in Germany and India advancing downstream graphite supply
The materials and mining sector saw increased attention as Evion Group NL (ASX:EVG), (OTC:EVIGF) confirmed that its Maniry Graphite Project in Madagascar has been awarded Strategic Project status under the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act. This development comes amid broader momentum on the ASX 200, which experienced gains led by resource-linked stocks and industrial activity.
The recognition from the EU places Evion’s flagship project within a list of assets critical to Europe's clean energy transition, giving the project enhanced visibility and positioning it to align with the bloc’s decarbonisation efforts. The index movement was partially influenced by renewed focus on strategic minerals and infrastructure alignment across key jurisdictions.
EU Status Elevates Maniry’s Profile
The designation was granted by the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, acknowledging Maniry's role in supporting Europe’s raw materials strategy. This status offers regulatory benefits such as streamlined permitting, improved access to EU-related funding initiatives, and enhanced visibility among European stakeholders.
Evion Group has outlined a pathway to meet with EU officials to further funding and development plans. The company also expects the designation to support discussions around offtake arrangements with European partners. The status highlights Maniry’s role in the supply of natural graphite, an essential input for energy storage and mobility systems.
Madagascar Operations Supported by Infrastructure Upgrades
The Maniry Graphite Project, located in southern Madagascar, benefits from proximity to new transport corridors developed with EU backing. The Kiembe Boulevard infrastructure project, connecting Toliara Port to the local airport, supports the project’s export logistics strategy.
Evion is engaging with Madagascar’s Ministry of Mines to finalise relevant licences and environmental approvals. The company has noted that there have been no material changes to the assumptions underpinning its project economics, and regulatory progress is expected to align with earlier planning frameworks.
Expansion Through International Downstream Activities
In addition to development at Maniry, Evion Group has reinforced its vertical integration model through partnerships in Germany and India. The company is working on a Battery Anode Material Project in Germany, aiming to use fine flake graphite from Maniry in its processing operations.
Evion also holds a joint venture interest in Panthera Graphite Technologies alongside Metachem Manufacturing Co. The India-based facility, situated in a Special Economic Zone, has completed initial shipments and is commercially active. The integration of upstream production and downstream processing reinforces supply chain resilience across geographies.
Broader Sector Sentiment Aligned with Clean Energy Priorities
With critical minerals gaining policy attention globally, developments like Evion’s Strategic Project status feed into a broader narrative shaping market sentiment. The ASX 200 reflected sector-specific strength as energy transition themes intersected with regulatory support measures across multiple jurisdictions.
Evion Group NL (ASX:EVG) continues to advance its graphite strategy, balancing resource development in Madagascar with processing expansion in Germany and India. The recent EU designation signals international recognition of the project’s role within the broader clean energy framework.
