Putting an end to Intel takeover rumors, semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries is reportedly looking to go public. In July, a few reports claimed that Intel was looking to acquire a New York-based semiconductor maker in a bid to boost its manufacturing capacity.

GlobalFoundries CEO Tom Caulfield had expressed his desire to go public and dismissed reports of an Intel acquisition. The company could be valued at around US$ 25 billion at the time of IPO.

The semiconductor manufacturer has filed the documents confidentially with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and it will likely go public in 2022.

GlobalFoundries IPO plans

Owned by Mubadala Investment Co. of the Abu Dhabi government, GlobalFoundries was formed after a spin-off from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in 2009. The company might be looking for an IPO to raise money from gross proceeds and expand its manufacturing capacity amid a worldwide shortage of semiconductors.

In July this year, GlobalFoundries said it would make an investment of US$ 1 billion toward expanding the manufacturing capacity at their New York facility to address the processor shortages.

To prepare for the initial public offering, GlobalFoundries is reportedly in touch with Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase & Co, and Credit Suisse Group AG among others with regards to the underwriting responsibility for the public debut.

What's next for GlobalFoundries?

The company seems to have the potential to expand its revenues as GlobalFoundries is also a manufacturer of radio-frequency communications chips for 5G, the new global wireless standard. It has a presence in over three continents and serves over 200 global customers.

GlobalFoundries also makes specialized semiconductors and chips for the automotive industry. It has emerged as one of the leading semiconductor companies and caters to the needs of companies like Intel and AMD who outsource parts of their chip production.

Bottom line

The public debut will depend on how soon the US SEC can process the application. To buy the stock of GlobalFoundries, retail investors will have to either wait for the IPO or get in touch with a stockbroker to buy the pre-IPO shares.
