 US markets close mixed as financials, energy stocks advance

Benchmark US indices closed mixed on Wednesday, June 23, after financials and energy scrips advanced, while other stock segments remained subdued.

The S&P 500 was down 0.11% to 4,241.84. The Dow Jones declined 0.21% to 33,874.24. The NASDAQ Composite rose 0.13% to 14,271.73. The small-cap Russell 2000 was up 0.33% to 2,303.47.

Financials, consumer, and energy segments of the S&P 500 remained in the positive territory, while the rest of the sectors saw broad decline. Utility stocks were the bottom movers.

Tech stocks ended the session near flat on the NASDAQ Composite as investors pivoted their attention towards value stocks with a strong rebound of the US economy lately.

Shares of lending firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fell more than 30% after the Supreme Court rejected the investors’ plea to stop the government’s move to transfer a portion of the companies’ profits to the Treasury Department.

Electric vehicle maker Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) stock skyrocketed 5.27%, helping the tech-heavy NASDAQ to register gains for third consecutive days. Ford Motor Co (F) and Lordstown Motors Corp. (RIDE) gained 3.65% and 8.97%, respectively. General Motors Co (GM) advanced 1.57%.

NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA) rose marginally by 0.82%, while Intel Corp (INTC) declined 0.99%. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd. gained 1.65%, and ASML Holdings (ASML) declined 0.77%.

Energy stocks were among the top gainers. Shares of Exxon Mobil (XOM) and PetroChina Co Ltd. (PTR) gained 0.60% and 0.89%, respectively, while Royal Dutch Shell (RDS-A) rose 0.52%.

In financial stocks, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-A) and Visa Inc. (V) shed 1.22% and 0.49%, respectively. JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) rose 0.66%, Bank of America Corp (BAC) gained 0.63%, and Mastercard Incorporated (MA) declined 0.82%.

In the crypto world, Coinbase Global (COIN) rose 1.59%, while Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) advanced 1.90% and 2.10%, respectively.

Top performers on S&P 500 included Tesla Inc (5.27%), Twitter Inc (4.25%), Under Armour Inc (3.74%), Ford Motor Co (3.42%). On NASDAQ, top performers were Entera Bio Ltd (44.77%), Bellerophon Therapeutics Inc (30.39%), Orphazyme A/S (24.62%), Moxian Inc (21.98%). On Dow Jones, Walt Disney Co (1.05%), Goldman Sachs Group Inc (0.98%), American Express Co (0.92%), JPMorgan Chase & Co (0.61%) were the leaders.

Top Losers

Top laggards on S&P 500 included Nov Inc (-7.38%), Comcast Corp (-3.73%), Fleetcor Technologies Inc (-2.67%), Henry Schein Inc (-2.55%). On NASDAQ, Gemini Therapeutics Inc (-31.53%), Torchlight Energy Resources Inc (-29.71%), Alfi Inc (-26.27%), Second Sight Medical Products Inc (-18.90%). On Dow Jones, 3M Co (-1.42%), International Business Machines Corp (-1.20%), Intel Corp (-1.09%), Cisco Systems Inc (-0.94%) were the laggards.

Volume Movers

Top volume movers were Sundial Growers Inc (26.26M), Entera Bio Ltd (24.24M), ContextLogic Inc (22.39M), Clover Health Investments Corp (16.99M), Torchlight Energy Resources Inc (16.80M), Orphazyme A/S (16.31M), Acasti Pharma Inc (15.31M), Apple Inc (11.77M), Ford Motor Co (15.49M), Comcast Corp (9.69M), Bank of America Corp (8.49M), General Electric Co (8.19M).

Futures & Commodities

Gold futures were slightly up 0.07% to US$1,778.60 per ounce. Silver increased 0.31% to US$25.938 per ounce, while copper rose 2.07% to US$4.3175.

Brent oil gains 0.80% to US$75.41 per barrel and WTI crude increased 0.59% to US$73.28.

Bond Market

The 30-year Treasury bond yields remained flat at 2.105, while the 10-year bond yields increased 0.90% to 1.485.

US Dollar Futures Index slightly increased 0.06% to US$91.803.
