Investing in Gold: Stability and Diversification

Gold is a traditional investment known for providing stability and diversification, particularly during economic uncertainty. Here's a summary of key facts about investing in gold.

How Much Gold Exists?

The World Gold Council (WGC) estimates that all the gold ever mined would fit into a cube with sides measuring 21 meters. Since the California Gold Rush in the 1850s, about 90% of the world’s gold has been extracted. Over the past decade, approximately half of this gold has been fashioned into jewelry, just over a quarter into bars and coins, and the rest used in technology and reserves.

Gold Ownership

Gold is quantified by weight. The US holds the largest gold reserve globally, with over 8,000 tonnes, representing 4% of the 187,200 tonnes mined so far. The UK, which sold 400 tonnes of gold between 1999 and 2002 when prices were low, now retains 310 tonnes stored in the Bank of England’s vaults.

Gold remains a key asset for investment, offering a time-tested way to balance portfolios and manage risk.
