Founded in 1980, Stagecoach Group is a leading UK public transport company that operates bus, coaches, and tram services in regulated and deregulated markets. Its operations are spread across England, Scotland and Wales.
The group provides transport solutions in urban and rural areas, which help to people travel for work, education, health, shopping and leisure opportunities and continuously seeks to invest in greener buses and coaches. It also provides coaches and bus services for various public events such as Cheltenham Gold Cup, Silverstone British Grand Prix, British Open, and Duxford Air Show. The group employs over 24,000 people and has over 8,300 buses, coaches and trams.
It operates city bus services in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Hull, Sheffield, Oxford, and Cambridge. Its inter-urban services link smaller locations and operates Supertram, a major tram network in Sheffield, a 28-km light rail network, transporting 12.5 million passengers every year. Further, it runs low-cost coach services through its brand Megabus.com, linking over 90 locations and carries more than 5 million passengers a year. It also operates Scotland’s largest coach brand Scottish Citylink along with international transport group ComfortDelGro.
Its major objectives are to maximise its core business potential in changing market, investing in people and technology to enhance customer experience by improving its operations and expanding and diversifying to the new markets with low risk and high profit opportunities. In 1996, the group started operating its first private rail services. Its key networks include the South Western and East Midlands Franchise. It also worked with Virgin to run train services on the West Coast inter-city rail franchise.
Its subsidiary Stagecoach Rail Replacement, which was founded in 2008, aims to provide planned and unplanned rail replacement bus services to the group’s rail business and other train businesses in across the country. It also provides its services to London North-Eastern Railways and Manchester Metrolink since 2017.
