Cogeco Communications made its first cable acquisition in 1972 with La Belle Vision. It went public in 1985.

In 1986 it acquired CFGL-FM, a radio station in Montreal, now known as Rythme FM. The company acquired Cablestrie and Tele- Cable BSL in 1987 and CableNet Ltd’s Burlington and Oakville systems in Ontario and Cybermedix in 1989.

In the mid-1990s, the company further expanded in Ontario by acquiring 25 cable networks with nearly 300,000 subscribers.

Cogeco Communications acquired Toronto Hydro Telecom in 2008 to enter the Greater Toronto Area. It acquired Toronto-based Peer 1 hosting in 2013

The company launched Cogeco TiVo service in Canada, an advanced television services through its subsidiary, Cogeco Cable.

Cogeco combined forces with its two subsidiaries, Cogeco Data Services and Peer 1 hosting, to increase its presence in the ICT sector in May 2015.

In August 2015, the company acquired MetroCast Connecticut through its US subsidiary, Atlantic Broadband, and expanded its presence in the United States.

Over the following years, it acquired various other companies and businesses, including DERYtelecom and Thames Valley Communications.

It launched EPICO, an internet TV service, in January 2021.
