 How the US and European Markets Performed in Wednesday’s Trading Session?

US Markets: Broader indices in the United States traded in red - particularly, the S&P 500 index traded 72.48 points or 2.55 per cent lower at 2,773.58, Dow Jones Industrial Average Index contracted by 580.76 points or 2.42 per cent lower at 23,369.00, and the technology benchmark index Nasdaq Composite traded lower at 8,371.43, down by 144.31 points or 1.69 per cent against its previous day close (at the time of writing, before the U.S market close at 11:40 AM ET).

US News: The Wall Street tumbled as the latest economic data unveiled the deep damage to the US economy. The US retail sales plunged by 8.7 per cent in March as against the anticipated 8 per cent. Also, the Empire State Manufacturing Index dropped to -78.2, while economists were projecting merely -35. Meanwhile, the banking giants, Bank of America and Citigroup reported the first-quarter loss and their stocks plummeted over 5 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively. Similarly, Charles Schwab stock dipped by around 6.7 per cent, post reporting the decline in net income by 18 per cent. Contrarily, Abbott Laboratories soared over 2.5 per cent as it was launching the Covid-19 test and it is expected that Abbott will ship around 1 million tests to US consumers.

S&P 500 (SPX)

Top Performers*: Netflix Inc, J B Hunt Transport Services Inc, and Marketaxess Holdings Inc shares increased by 3.15%, 2.89% and 1.22%, respectively.

Non Performers*: Noble Energy Inc, Howmet Aerospace Inc and PVH Corp shares decreased by 16.80%, 14.84% and 13.14%, respectively.

NASDAQ Composite (IXIC)

Top Performers*: Comstock Holdings Companies Inc, Dropcar Inc, and ShiftPixy Inc shares expanded by 191.56%, 97.10% and 82.40%, respectively.

Worst Performers*: Obalon Therapeutics Inc, Frontier Communications Corp and Top Ships Inc shares plunged by 31.90%, 26.97% and 25%, respectively.

Top Worst Sectors*: Energy (-7.45%), Financials (-4.17%), and Utilities (-3.75%).

Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI)

Top Performers*: UnitedHealth Group Inc and Procter & Gamble Co are the top gainers and increased by 0.67% and 0.36%, respectively.

Non Performers*: Dow Inc, American Express Co, and Exxon Mobil Corp shares decreased by 7.89%, 6.70% and 6.29% respectively.

European Markets: The London’s broader equity benchmark index FTSE 100 traded at 193.66 points or 3.34% lower at 5,597.65, the FTSE 250 index snapped at 735.01 points or 4.57% lower at 15,347.56, and the FTSE All-Share Index ended 112.70 points or 3.52% lower at 3,087.44, respectively. Another European equity benchmark index STOXX 600 ended down by 10.85 points or 3.25 per cent, at 323.06. Among other major European indices, DAX index closed the session at 10,279.76, down by 416.80 points or 3.90%; CAC 40 index decreased by 170.18 points or 3.76% and ended the trading session at 4,353.72.

European News: London and European markets dipped as there is an indication of lockdown extension while falling oil price hit the blue-chip index FTSE 100. Subsequently, the stock of Royal Dutch Shell and BP fell around 5 per cent each due to persistent oversupply and nosedived demand due to lockdown scenario amid the coronavirus outbreak. On the other hand, Hiscox stock slumped by 16.3 per cent. Meanwhile, the pub operators - J D Weatherspoon and Mitchells & Butlers, tumbled over 10 per cent due to prolonged loss of earnings.

London Stock Exchange

Top Performers*: COSTAIN GROUP PLC (COST), FUNDING CIRCLE HOLDINGS PLC (FCH) and CONNECT GROUP PLC (CNCT) are top movers and rose by 50.91%, 23.64% and 17.03%, respectively.

Worst Performers*: SUPERDRY PLC (SDRY), TULLOW OIL PLC (TLW) and FOXTONS GROUP PLC (FOXT) plunged by 25.40%, 20.10% and 20%, respectively.

FTSE 100 Index

Best Gainers*: OCADO GROUP PLC (OCDO), FLUTTER ENTERTAINMENT PLC (FLTR) and COMPASS GROUP PLC (CPG) expanded by 5.09%, 1.50% and 0.60%, respectively.

Non Performers*: MELROSE INDUSTRIES PLC (MRO), EASYJET PLC (EZJ) and EVRAZ PLC (EVR) plunged by 10.54%, 8.90% and 7.96%, respectively.

Shares traded with high-level volume*: (LLOY) LLOYDS BANKING GROUP PLC; (BARC) BARCLAYS PLC; (VOD) VODAFONE GROUP PLC.

Top Sectors traded in the negative zone*: Energy (-5.98%), Basic Materials (-4.84%), and Financials (-4.53%).

Oil Prices*: WTI crude oil future price was nudging at $20.14 per barrel, and Brent crude oil future price was trading at $28.32 per barrel.

Forex Rates*: GBP/USD and EUR/GBP were hovering at 1.2545 and 0.8703, respectively.

Bond Yields*: U.S 10-Year Treasuries yield was tilting at 0.641%, and the UK 10-Year Government Bond yield was hovering at 0.304%, respectively.
