Chaos at British ports has started impacting different businesses. Ikea is the latest victim to be affected by the logjam. The company has apologised to its customers for shortages due to blockage.

  • Food meant for British supermarkets are getting trapped in Europe as shipping lines are refusing to release goods for transport back to the UK.
  • The British Retail Consortium has said that the ongoing Brexit talks have made it harder for firms to prepare for the New Year.
  • The UK government has already warned that the current port chaos could be repeated next year as new Brexit checks come into force.
  • Earlier, Chief Executive of the British Ports Association, Richard Ballantyne had stated that there had been a sharp increase witnessed in traffic which has now been spreading across the wider port industry.
  • He added that this is major because container movements across the globe spurted with the traditionally busy pre-Christmas period. Also, some people have started moving more goods before the end of the UK’s Brexit transition ends on 31 December 2020.
  • Meanwhile, both the UK and the EU have agreed to extend the deadline to reach a favourable deal on post-Brexit trade.

Von Der Leyen and British Prime Minister Johnson in a joint statement after their key phone call on Sunday afternoon said that they have discussed the major unsettled issues and their teams dealing the negotiations have been working day and night over recent days.
