Summary
- World reported 529,851 cases of COVID-19 on Sunday.
- Less than 10K infections were reported globally, for first time in a month.
- India’s fresh cases ease, however rural areas see a spike.
The COVID-19 pandemic is seen easing out across the globe, as fresh infections in India have been dwindling for four days on the trot now.
On Sunday, the world reported 529,851 fresh cases of the highly contagious virus – its lowest level in almost one and a half months. The world also saw less than 10,000 COVID-19 deaths for the first time in a month as it reported 9,437 – lowest daily fatalities since 15 March.
India, despite, the situation in the country easing a little bit, continues to be the epicentre – reporting more than half of the daily global fresh infections. The world’s second most populous country, on Sunday, reported 281,860 infections – the lowest since 20 April 2021.
The dip in the fresh cases was primarily driven by gradual reduction of fresh infections in the three major cities – Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Three cities, which have been ripped apart by the second wave of the deadly pandemic, reported less than 10,000 cases each – a first in many months.
As fresh infections dip, the demand for oxygen has started to subside in metro cities, according to the volunteers on ground. However, the demand for plasma has surged.
Despite this correction in the cities, the surge in rural cases has set panic alarms ringing in India. In some rural districts of Karnataka, the positivity rate has touched almost 40%. Till now, rural areas in India were mostly immune to the virus.
Experts say, that increased COVID-19-appropriate behaviour by individuals, coupled with strict regional lockdowns have helped the cause.
However, even as the total daily fresh infections have come down, the fatalities continue to hover near 4,000-mark; the country reported about 4,092 deaths on Sunday.

The lockdowns across regions have also increased the rate of unemployment in the country, as daily wagers find it difficult to find job opportunities in the cities. The urban unemployment rate in the country has touched double-digit-mark at 10.9%.
