The Argentina national football team will be playing against Brazil in the Copa America 2020 final on Sunday, June 11. Thanks to the breath-taking penalty shootout win over Colombia, Barcelona legend Lionel Messi will now be seeking his first major title after a series of disappointing runs in the previous World Cup and Copa America championships.
Amid raging debates over who will win Copa America 2020, blockchain-based fan engagement platform Socios announced on Wednesday, July 7, that Argentina’s official fan token, $ARG, is set to be available for access shortly.
The team's and Messi’s popularity appear to have had some impact on the token already, as it recorded a sale of about 600,000 tokens in just three hours during the pre-sale window.
The demand was so high that the platform crashed for a few hours on Wednesday.
What are fan tokens?
Like cryptocurrencies, fan tokens can be fetched through blockchain platforms and can serve as digital assets. These can be used for goods and services such as tickets, official merchandise and VIP experiences
In addition, fan tokens enable its owners to vote on certain internal matters of the football teams and allow them to earn club-specific rewards and experiences.
As for $ARG, the token will be available on the Socios app. Powered by digital currency Chiliz, Socios operates on the Chiliz blockchain.
Football and crypto trading enthusiasts can explore fan tokens in exchange for the Chiliz token ($CHZ).

Where will Argentina's fan token $ARG land in future?
The initial cost of the token has been set at US$ 2 (1.69 Euros) per unit for its launch date. After that, the price would be determined according to the coin’s demand and supply in the market.
Fan token $ARG could soar high on the back of the combined fame of the Argentina football team and Lionel Messi, one of the most popular football players in the world.
As football and cryptocurrency enthusiasts eagerly await the final match of Copa America, the blockchain platform might try to make gains on the loyalty of the La Albiceleste fan base.
Argentina was the first national team to own a fan token. Many international football clubs like Manchester City, Barcelona FC and Paris Saint-Germain have their fan tokens. Portugal was also set to launch its fan token. However, an untimely exit from the Euro Cup 2020 might have caused a delay in the launch.
The above constitutes a preliminary view and any interest in stocks and cryptocurrencies should be evaluated further from investment point of view.
