Chinese search engine service Baidu Inc (NASDAQ: BIDU, BIDU:US) announced on Monday that it will be seeking a partnership for car manufacturer Zhejiang Geely Holding Group for the production of electric vehicles. Baidu’s move comes amid a rising trend of tech enterprises rushing to carve a space in the up-and-coming electric vehicle industry, especially following Tesla Inc’s (NASDAQ: TSLA, TSLA:US) accomplishment in the EV sector.
Most recently, Apple Inc (NASDAQ: APPL, TSLA:APPL) announced its plans to launch an electric vehicle by 2024. E-commerce juggernaut Alibaba Group too has signed a joint venture with biggest auto company SAIC Motor Corp to manufacture EVs.
The Baidu-Zhejiang Geely news comes around the same time as reports of Tesla Inc planning to an EV designing studio in Shanghai or Beijing. Chinese EV maker Nio Inc also recently up-ed its game as it announced the launch of its first sedan model, which will be available at a starting price of 378,000 yuan (US$ 58,378) without the battery pack.
Nio William Li told reporters on Sunday that as the EV industry continues to evolve, the company may seek to launch mass market vehicles under a different brand.
Stocks of both Baidu Inc and Geely Automobile Holdings climbed by about 16 per cent on Friday, January 8.
