Highlights:

  • Key Partnership Secured: Recyclus Group signs a black mass offtake agreement with Glencore for European supply.
  • Strategic Trial Phase: The deal begins with a 100-tonne trial, with commercial terms to follow.
  • Market Expansion: Agreement complements global strategy, including partnerships in India, to drive sustainable battery recycling.

Technology Minerals PLC’s (LSE:TM1) subsidiary, Recyclus Group, has reached a significant milestone by signing a black mass offtake agreement with Glencore PLC (LSE:GLEN). This strategic partnership will see Recyclus supply black mass, a critical material derived from recycled lithium-ion batteries, to Glencore’s European operations.

Production will originate from Recyclus’ industrial-scale recycling facility in Wolverhampton, UK. The agreement begins with a 100-tonne trial phase to assess quality and operational efficiency. Upon successful completion, both parties will revisit the commercial terms for a longer-term arrangement.

Strengthening European Market Presence

The agreement positions Recyclus as a key player in the European recycling market, providing an accessible route for black mass distribution. The deal also aligns with Recyclus' broader strategy to engage with geographically diverse partners to address rising global demand for critical minerals in the battery supply chain.

This latest deal complements Recyclus’ existing partnership with LOHUM in India, where regulatory delays have slowed initial progress. Together, these partnerships underscore Recyclus’ ability to establish a foothold in multiple markets, further expanding its international reach.

The Importance of Black Mass

Black mass is a byproduct of lithium-ion battery recycling and contains essential metals such as lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt. These critical minerals can be reprocessed and reintegrated into the manufacturing of new batteries, providing a sustainable solution for the growing demand within the electric vehicle and energy storage sectors.

Recyclus’ advanced recycling processes have demonstrated success in recovering these minerals, addressing both environmental challenges and the need for a circular economy in battery production.

Industry Support and Growth

Robin Brundle, chairman of Technology Minerals and director of Recyclus, described the agreement as a pivotal step in advancing Recyclus’ mission to support the global shift to electrification. He highlighted the deal as a strong endorsement of the company’s recycling technology and a reflection of increasing commercial demand for black mass solutions.

“This marks another key milestone in our mission to return the critical minerals needed to power a sustainable transition to the battery supply chain,” Brundle stated. “The agreement further underscores our potential to build international trading partnerships as the world shifts to electrification.”

A Sustainable Future

The Recyclus-Glencore partnership highlights the growing emphasis on sustainable supply chains and critical mineral recovery. As electrification accelerates, the role of companies like Recyclus becomes increasingly crucial in meeting demand while reducing reliance on newly mined materials.

The deal signifies Recyclus’ position as an emerging leader in the battery recycling industry and reflects strong confidence in its technological capabilities. By partnering with global players such as Glencore, the company is well-positioned to play a significant role in the evolving energy landscape.
