Summary

  • Moderna was granted emergency use authorization by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 18 December
  • Moderna’s vaccine has 95 per cent efficacy
  • Canada, South Korea will be procuring 40 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine each from Moderna

Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) is among the pioneers which has been authorised by the regulatory body to provide Covid-19 vaccines in the United States. Although Moderna was granted emergency use authorization (EUA) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), its stock plunged by nearly 10 per cent this Monday owing to negative investor sentiments after it was reported that a patient had developed severe allergic reaction moments after getting a dose of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine. According to experts, Covid-19 vaccine trials from Moderna were of highest quality.

Over the next few weeks, the UK government is planning to boost mass inoculation campaign and distribute nearly 8 million doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. During the initial rounds of vaccination campaign, elderly people, nursing home residents, residents of care homes, police officers, manufacturing workers, frontline healthcare staff, and people involved in supply of essentials were vaccinated first. These are the high-priority groups identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

On Tuesday, Moderna Inc said that in an attempt to provide an additional layer of protection to workers involved in the supply and distribution of the vaccine, the company will offer small quantities of its new Covid-19 vaccine to its own workforce. Notably, these doses are separate from the 200 million doses that Moderna has promised to supply in the US by the middle of 2021. In addition, Moderna could also offer vaccines to volunteers who received a placebo in the final-stage study.

Moderna and Pfizer have indicated that there might be some side effects of their vaccine that are identical to coronavirus symptoms. Interestingly, even if you suffer from such side effects, you cannot blame anybody in the US. The Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act (PREP), enacted in February 2020, provides immunity to the Covid-19 vaccine makers from liabilities for any injuries or damages caused by the vaccine. The vaccines have been developed in record time and have been authorised by the FDA.

Meanwhile, Moderna Inc is in discussions with the South Korean government to supply nearly 40 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine. Besides, Canada has secured an agreement with Moderna Inc for 40 million doses.
