The long-awaited Met gala is finally on! The fashion ceremony usually happens on the first Monday of May, but it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The fashion event didn’t occur in 2020; thus, 2021 holds significance in the fashion industry and beyond.

The 2021 red carpet

The 2021 Met gala is more intimate, keeping in mind the deadly coronavirus. Celebrities and fashion icons got on the red carpet on 13 September with a new zeal towards fabricating styles that are unique and inspiring. The 2021 gala bash was organised at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Significance of Met gala

Met Gala is the most awaited event in the fashion industry. Like Oscars is to the cinema, Met gala is to the fashion world. Every year different themes are organised like punk, religion, etc. Stars, fashion icons and other celebrities dress according to the theme.

Met Gala theme 2021

This year's Met gala’s dress code is “American independence.” The 2021 Met gala’s theme is to acknowledge and celebrate American identity, freedom and unity. In addition, the theme is focused upon celebrating all things American fashion. American identity and fashion have transformed over the years depending upon society’s social and political structure.

The new designers are more adapted to the changes and dedicated towards thoughtful fashion. The wave of sustainable and inclusive fashion has its own league going, and the Met Gala is ‘the bash” to celebrate inclusivity, sustainability, and diversity.

Highlights of the exhibit

The exhibit was held in two parts: A Lexicon of Fashion'' and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” For the 2021 Met gala, Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka would co-chair the affair, while Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour were to serve as the honorary chairs.

The most unexpected outfits of the Gala bash 2021

Met gala 2021 is dominated by the Gen Z generation; thus, it is more unexpected and exciting. This year’s outfits are not simply about fashion, but, rather they are about thoughtful fashion. How one can convey the thoughts through their dresses, Met gala 2021 is all about that!

For instance, AOC’s “Tax the Rich” outfit is extraordinary. It conveys the most important aspect of equality among various economic groups. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s dress code is a direct symbol of support for progressive taxation.

Next, Model and actor Cara Delevingne’s outfit also flashed another social issue and shouted loud and clear, “Peg the Patriarchy.” Likewise, the matter of equal rights for women was also given equal heed by congresswoman Carolyn Maloney dress code that said, “Equal rights for women.”

Bottomline

This year at the Met Gala, stars are celebrating American independence. Designers who have not been in the mainstream celebrity culture were also allotted a chance this year. Fashion is not less than a mirror to society, and if it is done in a thoughtful way, it can bring about significant changes.

With Gen Z people lead the Met Gala and outfits talk about taxes, patriarchy and equal pay, fashion becomes more sustainable, inclusive, and diverse- wouldn’t you agree?
