  • The funding underlines the strategic importance of nickel for clean energy and defense manufacturing.

Talon Metals Corp. (TSX:TLO; OTC Pink: TLOFF), through its wholly owned subsidiary Talon Nickel (USA) LLC, has been awarded a research and development (R&D) contract by the U.S. Department of Defense's Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to fund scientific research aimed at developing new methods for extracting nickel, cobalt, and iron from domestic nickel sulphide ores and tailings. The research will be centered on Talon's Tamarack Nickel Project, which includes a proposed underground nickel-copper mine in central Minnesota, and the Battery Mineral Processing Facility in Mercer County, North Dakota. Both projects are currently in the early stages of state and federal permitting.

Research Focus and Funding Details
The DLA has committed to providing US$2.47 million in funding over a 15-month period for the project titled "Building a Domestic Supply Chain of +99% Pure Nickel Powders and Value-Added Products for Clean Energy and Defense Related Manufacturing through a Novel Flowsheet to Process Domestically Sourced Polymetallic Sulphide Ores." The funding will support Talon’s efforts to develop a domestic supply chain for high-purity nickel, which is crucial for electric batteries, clean energy systems, and defense platforms.

This funding demonstrates the long-term strategic importance of nickel in various high-tech and clean energy sectors, highlighting a commitment to reducing dependence on foreign sources of critical minerals. Specifically, it underscores the United States' aim to challenge the dominance of China and Russia in supplying nickel for clean energy and battery production.

Strategic Importance of the Project
The funding aligns with Talon’s view, as well as assessments from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), that the Midcontinent Rift in the Lake Superior region is a highly prospective area for nickel sulphide deposits, with the potential for district-scale mineralization. Talon will leverage technologies developed by U.S. national laboratories and leading U.S. research institutions to advance its research.

The project also aligns with a broader bipartisan focus on American innovation, with Congress demonstrating a commitment to reducing U.S. reliance on foreign countries for critical mineral processing. If successful, the research could play a key role in ensuring that nickel produced for U.S. defense requirements and battery supply chains meets high labor standards and environmental protections, while also promoting participation from indigenous communities.

Research Methodology and Potential Co-Products
The research project will explore innovative approaches to extracting nickel, cobalt, and iron from domestic sources, including the use of sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide recycling technologies in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory. The project will also investigate hydrometallurgical precipitation methods for co-products through neutralization of leachates and employ Reductive Leach with Electrochemical Reagent Regeneration Technology in partnership with the Columbia Electrochemical Energy Center.

The ultimate goal of the initiative is to produce U.S. nickel for use in battery Cathode Active Material (CAM), particularly for lithium-ion batteries, and to recover nickel lost during traditional flotation processes. Additionally, the project will explore valuable co-products such as Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) and magnesium carbonate, which could be used to reduce tailings waste and enhance the overall value derived from each ton of ore.

Talon’s involvement in this groundbreaking research highlights the Company’s commitment to supporting U.S. efforts to build a sustainable and secure supply chain for critical minerals needed for the green energy transition and defense applications.

Talon’s Commitment to Innovation
Talon’s Tamarack Nickel Project represents a critical component of the Company’s strategy to become a leading North American supplier of responsibly sourced nickel, cobalt, and other critical minerals. This new funding from the DLA provides further validation of the project’s importance to the future of clean energy and defense manufacturing in the U.S.
