KWG Resources Inc. (CSE: CACR), doing business as The Canadian Chrome Company, is pleased to announce that its subsidiary Canada Chrome Corporation (CCC) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with AtkinsRéalis Canada Inc.. This agreement supports AtkinsRéalis' application for work permits necessary for the Northern Road Link project, a key infrastructure development connecting the proposed Marten Falls Community Access Road and the Webequie Supply Road in northwestern Ontario.
The Northern Road Link is a multi-use all-season road designed to improve accessibility and foster development in the James Bay Lowlands. It will significantly benefit both the local First Nations communities, including Marten Falls First Nation and Webequie First Nation, and mining operations in the Ring of Fire, an area rich in chromite and other minerals.
The agreement reflects KWG's long-standing commitment to supporting infrastructure development that benefits local communities, particularly Indigenous communities, and fosters economic opportunities in the James Bay Lowlands. KWG has actively championed initiatives for the equitable sharing of the economic and social benefits of infrastructure and mining development with the communities of northwestern Ontario. As Frank Smeenk, CEO of KWG, stated, "For more than 15 years, KWG has been supportive of these infrastructure projects, believing in equitable benefits for the local communities and mining enterprises alike."
The Memorandum of Agreement stipulates that CCC will grant temporary access rights to AtkinsRéalis for the purpose of conducting necessary geotechnical investigations and aggregate testing along the proposed road route. The access rights, covering portions of CCC’s mineral exploration claims, will enable vital work for the construction of the road and the Utility Corridor, a key component of the infrastructure that will support electrification systems in the region.
The Utility Corridor is expected to extend 330 kilometers from Nakina, Ontario, to KWG's Black Horse chromite discovery in the Ring of Fire. The corridor will also provide electrification connections to several First Nations communities, enhancing both access to energy and the region's mining potential. KWG believes that this collaboration will not only support the road construction but also accelerate the development of mining projects in the Ring of Fire by providing essential infrastructure, such as transportation and electricity systems, to facilitate resource extraction.
The agreement includes a commitment for AtkinsRéalis to provide KWG and CCC with reports, as-built drawings, and shapefiles detailing the geological findings, aggregate sources, and groundwater monitoring results. These studies are expected to be invaluable for the ongoing development of mining operations in the region, particularly in the context of Ontario’s Mining Act.
The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement is a critical step toward the realization of the Northern Road Link and the associated infrastructure projects in the James Bay Lowlands. KWG’s continued involvement in these efforts underscores its dedication to sustainable development and ensuring that local communities, particularly Indigenous groups, play an active role in the economic benefits of the area’s natural resources.
The project remains contingent upon obtaining the necessary permits and regulatory approvals. However, with the memorandum in place, KWG and its partners are one step closer to a transformative infrastructure project that promises to benefit both local communities and the broader mining sector in Ontario.
