MustGrow Biologics Corp. (TSXV:MGRO) has received funding from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) to explore the potential of mustard-derived ingredients for applications in human and animal health. This support, granted through the AgriScience Program – Projects Component of the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership, aims to advance research on the health benefits of mustard seed bioactive components.
The project will be conducted in collaboration with the Guelph Research & Development Centre in Ontario. The research will focus on analyzing the bioactive compounds found in mustard seeds, specifically yellow mustard extracts. The goal is to determine their potential applications in health and nutrition.
The research will assess several key areas: the ability of mustard seed extracts to convert glucosinolates into active ingredients, their antifungal and antibacterial properties, and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This includes testing the extracts against various microbes and diseases, such as Fusarium wilt TR4, and evaluating their potential use in functional foods and nutraceuticals. The findings could lead to the development of products that enhance immunity and gut health for humans and serve as alternatives to antibiotics in animal feeds.
MustGrow anticipates identifying various product opportunities through this initiative. Potential applications include functional foods and supplements aimed at improving immune and gut health in humans, as well as innovative solutions for animal nutrition.
The company continues to focus on its core business, which involves natural agricultural biopesticides, biofumigants, and biofertility products derived from mustard seeds and their by-products. MustGrow’s biofertility product, TerraSante, is currently available in the United States. Additionally, MustGrow is advancing biocontrol development programs with several global partners, including Bayer, Sumitomo Corporation, Janssen PMP, and NexusBioAg.
This research effort highlights MustGrow’s commitment to utilizing mustard seed components for innovative health solutions while maintaining its focus on natural agricultural products. The partnership with AAFC and the Guelph Research & Development Centre represents a significant step in exploring new applications for mustard-derived ingredients.
