Immunic Inc has presented significant data on its primary asset, vidofludimus calcium, at the 40th Congress of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS). This congress, held from September 18 to 20 in Copenhagen, Denmark, has provided a platform for showcasing the drug's potential in the management of multiple sclerosis (MS) within the healthcare sector.
Phase 2 CALLIPER Trial Insights
In the Phase 2 CALLIPER trial, vidofludimus calcium demonstrated a consistent reduction in neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels. This outcome suggests the drug might influence disease progression across various progressive MS subtypes. The results indicate that vidofludimus calcium could have a significant impact on the progression of MS.
Effects on Fatigue and Neuroprotection
The drug's potential to address fatigue in MS patients was also highlighted. Vidofludimus calcium appears to inhibit Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation, a factor associated with MS-related fatigue. Additionally, preclinical data suggests that vidofludimus calcium may offer neuroprotective benefits, potentially enhancing neuronal survival through Nurr1 activation.
Anti-inflammatory Properties
The data also points to a reduction in pathogenic peripheral T helper cells, indicating a possible pathway for treating MS. This anti-inflammatory effect aligns with the broader profile of vidofludimus calcium as a potential therapeutic agent for MS.
Presentation Details
The findings will be shared through an oral poster presentation and three ePosters during the ECTRIMS event. These presentations will provide further insights into the data generated for vidofludimus calcium.
Statements from Immunic's CEO
Immunic (NASDAQ:IMUX)’s CEO, Dr. Daniel Vitt, emphasized the significance of having four poster presentations at the ECTRIMS Congress. Dr. Vitt expressed enthusiasm about the data, which covers various aspects of vidofludimus calcium, including interim data from the CALLIPER trial, antiviral effects on fatigue, neuroprotective data, and anti-inflammatory effects.
Looking ahead, Dr. Vitt mentioned that the next major update for vidofludimus calcium will be the topline data from the CALLIPER trial, expected in April next year. He highlighted that successful results from this trial, combined with data from the ENSURE program and the drug’s established safety profile, might position vidofludimus calcium distinctively in the market compared to other MS treatments.
