WestJet and Telus Corp. have announced a strategic partnership to offer complimentary internet service onboard flights to members of WestJet Rewards starting from December. This initiative will leverage Starlink, a satellite internet service by SpaceX, known for its high-bandwidth capabilities delivered via low-earth orbit satellites.
According to WestJet (TSX:WJA), Starlink's technology will ensure that all passengers on their aircraft can enjoy robust internet connectivity suitable for activities such as livestreaming videos and online gaming, akin to home broadband speeds.
Jason Fritch, SpaceX's vice-president of Starlink enterprise sales, highlighted that over 1,000 aircraft globally have already committed to using Starlink's services.
By the end of 2025, WestJet plans to equip its entire modern narrow-body fleet with free Wi-Fi, followed by its wide-body aircraft by the end of 2026. This deployment aims to enhance the passenger experience significantly across its fleet.
WestJet and Telus (TSX:T) emphasized that this collaboration marks the beginning of a long-term partnership, with further announcements expected in the future.
