- Railway Negotiations Set to Reopen as Teamsters Canada and Rail Firms Agree on Mediation
Teamsters Canada, Canadian National Railway, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City have agreed to resume stalled contract negotiations with the assistance of federal mediators, announced Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon on Monday.
In a statement posted on X, MacKinnon highlighted that the recent meetings involved "frank, constructive discussions" that underscored the serious implications for Canada's railways, workforce, and broader economy. The discussions aimed to accelerate and increase the frequency of negotiations, which had previously slowed after the federal government temporarily suspended workers' right to strike, according to Teamsters Canada.
The parties are scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday in Montreal and Calgary. The Teamsters union emphasized that a work stoppage could be avoided if both companies present fair and equitable proposals.
Earlier this year, Teamsters Canada members voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike. Given Canada's extensive reliance on its railway network for transporting exports such as grain, potash, and coal, the outcome of these negotiations is critical for maintaining economic stability.
