Canadian Markets’ March Trading Volume Pops Up By 50% In Q1

The stock trading volume across leading Canadian marketplaces witnessed a growth of about 50 per cent year-to-date (YTD), said the TMX Group Limited on Tuesday, April 6, while announcing the trading statistics for March. The monthly value was C$ 795 billion, an increase of 12.3 per cent YTD.

TMX shared the statistics for its marketplaces Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), Toronto Stock Exchange Venture (TSXV), Montréal Exchange (MX) and Toronto Stock Exchange Alpha (TSXA).

What Do March 2021 TMX Numbers Say?

Over 22.4 billion stocks were traded in March 2021 across all marketplaces in the TMX group. This was down by about 2 per cent year-over-year (YoY). Their value was worth C$ 316.2 billion, down from C$ 350.7 billion last year.

The total number of transactions last month was 38 million, a decrease of 51.05 per cent YoY. For the same period, the daily transactions were 1.6 million, down by 62.5 per cent.

The daily average volume was 977.4 million, down by 6.5 per cent YoY.

A Look at the TSX March Numbers

Last month, the TSX’s share trading volume was 11.8 billion, down by 29.3 per cent YoY. For the same period, the total number of transactions was 30.8 million, a decrease of about 65 per cent. The value of the transactions was C$ 281.1 billion, down by 12.1 per cent YoY.

For the same period, the daily average of the volume of shares traded was 516.8 million, down by 47.7 per cent YoY. The daily average value of the shares traded was C$ 12,222.2 million, down by 17.2 per cent YoY.

The daily average of the number of transactions was 1.3 million, down by 72 per cent YoY.

TSXV March Numbers

For March 2021, the share trading volume was 7.9 billion, up by 113.5 per cent YoY. For the same period, the value of the transactions was worth C$ 5.2 billion, an increase of about 373 per cent YoY. The number of transactions was 3.2 million, up by 357 per cent YoY.

The daily average of the volume of shares traded at the TSXV was 347.4 million, an increase of about 51 per cent YoY. The daily average value of these shares was C$ 229.3 million, up by 78 per cent YoY.

The daily average transaction was 142,318, an increase of 77.5 per cent YoY.
