The TSX Composite Index climbed higher Wednesday, January 12. Base metals gained 3.4 per cent and energy 1.5 per cent to take the index 120.19 points higher. The 0.56 per cent growth landed the index at 21,395.00 points. A notable mention, First Quantum Minerals Ltd, whose stock rose 9.6 per cent.

Volume actives
Suncor Energy Inc saw 14.5 million shares traded, making it the most active stock. It was followed by Enbridge Inc that saw 9.8 million shares switch hands, and Manulife Financial Corporation saw 9.6 million shares traded.
Movers and laggards

Wall Street update
It was revealed Wednesday that US inflation was at a 40-year high. However, that did not deter Wall Street from closing in the green.
The Dow ended 38.3 points higher, 0.11 per cent, to 36,290.32 points, while the S&P 500 spiked 13.28 points, 0.28 per cent, to 4,726.35 points. The Nasdaq benchmark grew 34.94 points, 0.23 per cent, to finish at 15,188.39.
Commodities update
Gold gained 0.48 per cent to US$ 1,827.30. Brent oil prices gained 1.13 per cent to US$ 84.67/bbl. Crude oil was up 1.75 per cent to US$ 82.64/bbl.
Currency news
The loonie posted a 0.59 per cent gain Wednesday while USD/CAD ended at 1.2500. The US Dollar Index was at 94.99 against the basket of major currencies, down 0.67 per cent.
Money market
The US 10-year bond yield gained 0.31 per cent to 1.752 and the Canada 10-year bond yield was up 2.02 per cent to 1.742.
