The United States Department of Justice said on Tuesday, February 8, that they have arrested two people for an alleged conspiracy to launder cryptocurrency.

In 2016, Bitfinex was hacked and the digital assets worth US$ 4.5 billion were stolen. Bitfinex is a cryptocurrency exchange platform.

According to the Department of Justice, cryptocurrency worth US$ 3.6 billion linked to the hack was seized by law enforcement.

Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan have been arrested over charges that they were involved in crypto laundering of the stolen funds.

Ever since the news of the arrest broke, it appears that people have become curious about Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan. That said, let's find out who they are.

According to reports, before the couple was arrested, both Heather Morgan and Ilya Lichtenstein used to give their opinions and advice on the prospects of virtual currencies and the importance of safeguarding crypto holdings.

Dubbing herself as the 'crocodile of the Wall Street', Heather Morgan is a part-time rapper and reportedly a former contributor at Forbes.

According to her profile on LinkedIn, Heather Morgan described herself as an investor in B2B software companies, a prolific writer and a serial entrepreneur.

Ms Morgan also claims to be an irreverent comedic rapper and reportedly uses the stage name of Razzlekhan. She claimed to have studied at the University of California and pursued a degree in economics and international relations.

Heather Morgan's husband, Ilya Lichtenstein's LinkedIn profile, describes him as an investor, coder, and technology entrepreneur. He claimed to be an enthusiast of blockchain technology, big data, and automation.

Mr Lichtenstein reportedly studied psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He wrote on his LinkedIn profile that his expertise is scaling B2B sales and outbound marketing.

Meanwhile, he was the founder and chief executive officer of MixRank, Y Combinator alum and an angel investor in startups and crypto technologies.

According to the Department of Justice, the couple allegedly employed several laundering techniques, including using fake identities to set up online accounts.

Heather Morgan and Ilya Lichtenstein have been charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering, a charge which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years under judicial custody. In addition, they also face charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States.
