Gunnison Copper Corp (TSX:GCU) initiates mineral processing at the Johnson Camp Mine in Arizona
Johnson Camp construction progresses with first copper expected in the third quarter
Company’s flagship Gunnison Copper Project targets efficient SX/EW production from large copper resources
Gunnison Copper Corp (TSX:GCU), listed on the S&P/TSX Composite Index and the TSX Venture Composite Index, is a copper development and production company focused on projects in the Southern Arizona Copper Belt. Operating in the basic materials sector, the company emphasizes the implementation of advanced and sustainable mining technologies to optimize copper extraction.
The company’s primary asset, the Gunnison Copper Project, is situated within the Cochise Mining District. This development is being advanced as an open-pit mining operation that utilizes heap leach technology combined with solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) to produce finished copper cathode. The project is noted for its large-scale copper resource and the application of efficient processing techniques, aligning with long-term sustainable production goals.
In addition to the flagship project, Gunnison Copper is progressing at its Johnson Camp Mine, which is fully permitted and strategically located in southeast Arizona. Construction at this site began with the development of the leach pad, and the company has now commenced mineral processing operations. This marks a significant phase for the company, as it transitions from construction to operational status. The site’s infrastructure supports both conventional leach technology and a specialized processing system developed through a collaboration with Nuton LLC, a venture formed by Rio Tinto.
Initial activities at Johnson Camp include the stacking and acid curing of mineralized materials. These steps are foundational in the leaching process and precede the production of copper cathode. First output from the conventional leaching method is anticipated within the current quarter, with additional output using the Nuton technology projected by the end of the year.
The Johnson Camp facility is designed to produce a steady supply of finished copper annually and operates under a fully funded model through support from Nuton LLC. This partnership underlines Gunnison Copper’s commitment to integrating advanced technologies in copper production while adhering to responsible environmental practices.
The company also recently completed a non-brokered private placement aimed at supporting ongoing development and operational requirements. The financing effort included units consisting of common shares and share warrants, offering extended execution timelines. These proceeds are expected to reinforce the financial framework needed to sustain project activities across both development and production phases.
Gunnison Copper continues to leverage its multi-asset portfolio in Arizona to advance copper supply capabilities through technically robust and environmentally mindful strategies. Its dual focus on conventional and innovative processing supports a diversified approach to production across its active sites.
