
Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Technology and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.29% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.37%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.87%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 0.69% or 0.22 points to trade at 31.98 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 0.65% or 0.23 points to end at 35.69 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 0.58% or 1.09 points to 188.92 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 3.89% or 12.38 points to trade at 306.12 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 2.96% or 4.43 points to end at 145.05 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 2.61% or 8.41 points to 313.39.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were NiSource Inc (NYSE:NI) which rose 3.37% to 23.96, FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE) which was up 3.10% to settle at 33.61 and CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE:CMS) which gained 2.57% to close at 51.87.
The worst performers were McCormick&Company Incorporated (NYSE:MKC) which was down 8.46% to 68.40 in late trade, DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which lost 7.87% to settle at 5.15 and Newell Brands Inc (NASDAQ:NWL) which was down 7.27% to 8.03 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Vericity Inc (NASDAQ:VERY) which rose 87.18% to 11.10, POINT Biopharma Global Inc (NASDAQ:PNT) which was up 84.89% to settle at 12.36 and Alx Oncology Holdings (NASDAQ:ALXO) which gained 56.13% to close at 7.51.
The worst performers were SmileDirectClub Inc (NASDAQ:SDC) which was down 53.45% to 0.08 in late trade, Capstone Green Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CGRN) which lost 37.40% to settle at 0.31 and Femasys Inc (NASDAQ:FEMY) which was down 35.99% to 2.49 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2416 to 537 and 51 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2696 fell and 805 advanced, while 116 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 12.32% to 19.78 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.39% or 7.25 to $1,839.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.80% or 0.71 to hit $89.53 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.44% or 0.40 to trade at $91.11 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.06% to 1.05, while USD/JPY fell 0.69% to 148.82.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.13% at 106.75.
