  • A fund of £265 million in subsidies announced by the UK Government for renewable energy developers.

  • This will be the first subsidy in more than five years for onshore wind and solar farms.

  • Solar energy accounts for just 4% of the total energy generation in Britain for now but it has the potential to make net zero a reality.

The Boris Johnson Government has recently announced that it is offering £265 million in subsidies for renewable energy developers. This will help the government in supporting a record number of projects in the renewable energy sector through the milestone subsidy scheme which is due later this year. Wind, Tidal, as well as solar projects will compete with each other for the contracts, and this will be the first subsidy in more than five years for onshore wind and solar farms.

As per recent government data, solar energy accounts for just 4% of the total energy generation in Britain, but following wind energy and biomass, it is the third most generated renewable energy in the UK. In EU, the UK holds the third position after Germany and Italy in solar energy production. Solar energy has been gaining popularity as it is eco-friendly and sustainable, reduces energy bills, is accessible for off the grid consumers, and also helps the economy by job creation.

At present, the UK has 14GW of solar generation installed capacity, which is contributing towards the transition of the UK towards clean energy, and in the 12 months to March 2021 alone, 663MW was installed which was more than double the power that was installed between April 2019 and March 2020. The solar sector saw this growth even amid the pandemic, which represents its potential role in the green recovery of the country and making net zero a reality.
