Highlights

  • Helix Exploration PLC (LSE:HEX) has initiated flow testing at two wells in its Rudyard Project located on the Montana Helium Fairway.

  • The company is focusing on multiple gas-bearing formations including the Souris and Red River zones, with testing planned at both Weil #1 and Linda #1.

  • Additional hydrocarbon presence has been identified in the deeper Duperow Formation, which may be explored further in upcoming drilling programs.

The helium sector, known for its relevance in medical imaging, semiconductor fabrication, and aerospace engineering, is experiencing increased exploration activity amid tightening global supply conditions. Within this environment, Helix Exploration PLC (LSE:HEX), listed on the London Stock Exchange, is taking a focused approach to helium development in the United States. The company's operations in Montana align with broader exploration interests among FTSE 100 stocks, many of which are exposed to commodities and essential materials.

Helium Testing Underway at the Rudyard Project

Helix Exploration has mobilised equipment to begin flow testing at the Weil #1 and Linda #1 wells, situated within the expansive Rudyard Project on the Montana Helium Fairway. The program marks a key phase in confirming helium availability and production capacity. Both wells are strategically positioned within geological formations known for hosting helium-rich gas, particularly the Souris and Red River layers.

Weil #1 had earlier demonstrated helium concentrations across distinct formations. The upcoming tests will perforate multiple zones to assess the combined production capacity. This integrated testing method is designed to improve consistency in gas output.

Advancement Through Multi-Zone Testing

The Linda #1 well, which was drilled and cased earlier this year, encountered multiple gas zones and helium indicators during initial work. Helix Exploration aims to test this well across the same intervals as Weil #1. Each test will be carried out over a multi-day period, with detailed data expected to follow in separate releases.

The testing strategy builds upon results from earlier programs on the Darwin #1 and Linda #1 wells, which helped define the resource framework of the area. The company’s multi-well approach could provide insights into reservoir performance and longer-term extraction prospects.

Additional Resource Prospects in the Region

While helium remains the primary focus, Helix Exploration has also encountered indications of hydrocarbons in the Duperow Formation, a carbonate reservoir beneath the main helium zones. Although not included in the current test campaign, this formation is scheduled for further study in upcoming drilling operations, beginning with the Inez #1 well.

The company continues to refine its geological understanding of the Rudyard acreage, which spans thousands of acres and is located in a region known for its historic gas shows. This approach complements a broader push across North America to locate and secure stable helium supply sources.

Industry Context and Commodity Relevance

Global helium supply remains under stress due to constrained output from traditional suppliers. This has prompted several exploration companies to expand activities in regions such as the US Midwest and Southwest. Helium’s unique characteristics—such as its inertness and low boiling point—make it difficult to substitute, reinforcing its role in sensitive technologies.

Helix Exploration’s progress fits within a wider context where companies exposed to essential materials, including those featured in ftse 100 stocks, are navigating resource access and development priorities. The ongoing helium test program in Montana underscores the continuing importance of strategic exploration in meeting industrial demand.
