It’s been two decades since the 9/11 terror attacks shook the USA. But as the saying holds to the ground: history repeats itself- the world is experiencing an endless loop of terror and counter-terror.
The clash between political and religious ideologies leads to the destruction of the masses. In the greed of more power - more oppression takes place. Thousands died in the USA during the 9/11 attacks, and thousands are dying today in Afghanistan as the Taliban takes over its province.
A synopsis of the 9/11 terror attacks
The 9/11 terror attacks are widely considered the most horrific act of international terrorism. The attacks were ghastly, killed almost three thousand people, and injured about 25,000 people in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Families after families were destroyed, some lost their infants, and some lost their aging parents.

Counterterrorism to the rescue
After the 9/11 terror attacks, the world abided together to fight terrorism. The USA led the war against terrorism. Over the years, it tried shooting down the powers of Islamic extremists. To fight the rising extremism, global economies built military forces, law enforcement authorities, and intelligence forces.
The journey of counterterrorism began with the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan that pulled apart the Taliban and Al-Qaeda infrastructure in 2001. Following that, in 2003, they captured the 9/11 operational leader Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. And finally, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011 after ten years of persistent search.

The return of terror: fall of Afghanistan
After years of struggle to fight and combat terrorism, the Taliban has captured Afghanistan once again. As a result, the Afghanistan government has left the throne, and the Taliban is now ruling Afghanistan.
As Taliban members started capturing villages and cities of Afghanistan, the US embassy people, and other US citizens started evacuating Afghanistan. A few days earlier, a suicide bomb attack at Kabul airport killed more than 10 US service members and about 90 Afghans.
The US has taken all their troops out of Afghanistan. Many see it to be a sign of accepted defeat. After years and struggle and resilience, the USA has finally withdrawn its troops from the Afghan land. It’s a shame for the world power to lose to a terrorist group when it’s close to the two-decade anniversary of the most significant terror attack.

The plight of the people
Amid the political, ideological, and religious clashes, it’s the common man who suffers the most. Be it Americans or Afghans; innocent citizens are drowning under the weight of high powers and extremism.
After the battle that costed the lives of 2000 thousand American service members and thousands of Afghan citizens, is now in favour of the terrorist group - Taliban. A recent report by the Pew Research Center has disclosed that 69% of U.S. adults are dissatisfied with the United States performance in Afghanistan.
Bottomline
The ongoing battle between terrorism and counterterrorism is leaving lasting scars on human rights. After two decades of the trauma from the 9/11 attacks, the USA seems to have again lost the battle. A terrorist group now rules an entire country. Other countries are evacuating their embassies from Afghanistan, but what about innocent Afghans who are left at the mercy of the Taliban? This calls for some serious discussion and action!
