Russia declares war on Ukraine: How Biden & other world leaders are reacting

Highlights 

  • After Putin’s war against Ukraine, Joe Biden, supporting Ukraine, has said that only Russia is responsible for the destruction this attack will bring.
  • Ukraine’s foreign minister has tweeted that this is a war of aggression and Ukraine will defend self and will win.
  • Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison also has reaffirmed Australia’s support for Ukraine while condemning Russia’s aggression.  

In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin today (February 24) announced a ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine. Putin has also warned other nations that if they try to interfere with this Russian activity, it would result into ‘never have seen’ consequences.

There are reports of huge explosions being heard in Kyiv, Kharkiv and other major areas of Ukraine.

Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, confirming the attack, has tweeted, “Putin has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under strikes. This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win. The world can and must stop Putin. The time is to act now.”

US President Joe Biden, showing full support to Ukraine, stated on Twitter that the US is united in its support for Ukraine, and in opposing Russia’s aggression. The official note from the White House stated that President Putin has chosen a premediated war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering. It stated further that Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring and, the US and its Allies and partners will respond in a united way. The world will hold Russia accountable, it stated.

Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison spoke to Ukrainian PM Shmyhal and reaffirmed Australia’s support for Ukraine and denounced Russia’s aggression.

UN Secretary- General Antonio Guterres has urged just recently that Putin should, in the name of humanity, bring his troops back to Russia and that this conflict should stop now.

Russia and Ukraine borders have been witnessing huge deployments of Russian military troops. The shelling had exaggerated in the eastern parts of Ukraine on Wednesday, as the reports stated.
