  • Ukraine targets dozens of Russian bombers in a drone-led offensive labeled “Spiderweb”

  • Belaya air base in Siberia among locations reportedly hit in coordinated long-range attack

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirms operation was over a year in planning

The aerospace and defense sector saw heightened attention following reports of an extensive drone strike by Ukraine on Russian military infrastructure. According to sources from Ukraine’s Security Service, the campaign targeted key air bases within Russian territory, aiming at long-range aircraft used for strategic operations. Among the affected facilities was the Belaya air base located in Russia’s Irkutsk region. This airfield lies deep in Siberia, several thousand miles from Ukraine, underscoring the extended operational capability used in the campaign.

The operation was reportedly part of a classified initiative named "Spiderweb," which targeted multiple aircraft installations across Russia. Ukraine’s Security Service has attributed direct oversight of the offensive to national leadership, indicating coordinated efforts spanning over an extended preparation period. Publicly traded companies connected to aerospace, surveillance, and autonomous technology sectors may be indirectly impacted by escalated interest in drone warfare capabilities.

'Spiderweb' Strategy Hits Russian Strategic Aircraft

Ukraine’s internal security authorities stated that the operation involved targeting a fleet of Russian strategic bombers. These aircraft have been a part of ongoing long-range campaigns and form a core component of Russia’s aerial offensive capabilities. The drone-led strike utilized advanced concealment strategies, including deployment mechanisms involving mobile cabin structures, which enabled the unmanned aerial vehicles to remain hidden until the point of launch.

Reports indicate that mobile cargo trucks carried the drones under wooden cabins, with roof structures engineered to open remotely. This allowed the drones to activate simultaneously and strike aircraft stationed at the targeted bases. Video footage purportedly showing explosions and burning aircraft was released shortly after the incident, reportedly capturing events at the Belaya base.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the strategic success of the operation and emphasized its importance, calling it the longest-range effort executed by the country’s security forces since the beginning of the conflict.

Multiple Russian Regions Report Drone Activity

In addition to the Irkutsk region, drone activity was confirmed in other Russian areas including Ryazan and Murmansk. While official Russian statements have been limited, regional authorities in Irkutsk acknowledged an attack on a military unit in Sredny. Local officials attributed the launch method to a truck-based system but did not directly confirm the damage to strategic aircraft or specific airfields.

The offensive coincided with other major incidents across bordering Russian regions. In Bryansk and Kursk, two separate bridge collapses resulted in fatalities and injuries. Authorities in these regions have alleged sabotage, although no claims of responsibility have been issued publicly. Railway infrastructure in both areas was significantly affected, with freight and passenger movement disrupted following the structural failures.

Ceasefire and Diplomatic Talks Scheduled Following Strike

The drone offensive precedes scheduled diplomatic meetings between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul. According to statements from Kyiv, the upcoming discussions will focus on core priorities such as an unconditional ceasefire, the return of captured individuals, and the reunification of displaced children. The timing of the operation and the subsequent diplomatic engagement suggest a multi-pronged strategy involving both military and negotiation frameworks.

This escalation follows a night of aerial bombardment across Ukrainian territory, during which Ukraine's air force reported extensive drone launches by Russia. Simultaneously, Ukraine suffered missile strikes that resulted in casualties at military training sites.
