Guardians of NZ Superannuation appoints for key positions

The Guardians of NZ Superannuation is a Crown unit, which manages NZ Super Fund worth $55 billion and intends to smooth the future costs of New Zealand superannuation.

The Guardians of NZ Superannuation has made 2 key appointments.

The entity has hired Paula Steed as general manager, finance and investment operations. She will handle the tax, finance, internal audit, and investment operations teams, of the Guardians.

Paula possesses a BCA in accounting and has done commercial law from the Victoria University of Wellington. She is currently ASB Bank’s chief internal auditor and has also worked as the chief financial officer (CFO) at UDC Finance and as division financial controller at ANZ.

Mark Fennell has been hired as the group’s general manager, risk, and will handle the data services, risk and records management teams for Guardians. He is Guardians’s general manager, portfolio completion, at present.

Mark holds a Master of Social Science (Hons) degree from the University of Waikato, and is a member of the Institute of Directors, Chartered Accountants Australia and NZ, and the Institute of Finance Professionals.

Prior to joining Guardians, he has worked for The Warehouse Group, Forestry Corporation, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in senior treasury and risk management positions.

The new hires will begin with their roles on July 5 and report to the chief executive, Matt Whineray.

New Board hires were done last year

Rosemary Vilgan was hired to the Guardians of NZ Superannuation’s Board on 1 October 2020 for a term of 5 years.

Vilgan is the chair of the Commonwealth Bank Group Staff Superannuation Fund and a member of many committees.

Chairman of the Guardians group, Catherine Savage, stated that NZ Super Fund was projected to reach NZ$70 billion of AUM within the next 10 years. Rosemary brings abundant international investment fund experience that will help the Guardians to scale up as the fund grows to NZ$70 million, as per Catherine.
