On 4 January 2020, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) set an emergency bushfire alert in Kwinana, Western Australia (WA). Crews in the WA region are simultaneously fighting three fires, two in greater Perth and another in Geraldton. The bushfires have affected the southern and south-eastern areas of the greater metropolitan region.
The fires that have burned ~70 hectares of land pose a serious threat to the lives of the residents who need to take immediate action for survival.
The DFES has issued an emergency warning in the southern suburbs, including parts of The Spectacles, Orelia, Medina, Postans, Kwinana beach, Naval Base and Hope Valley.
The bushfire began near the junction of Thomas Road & Gilmore Avenue located in Orelia. The fire department highlighted that the fire was moving fast in the north-westerly direction.

People residing in the regions surrounded by Beard Road towards north, Rockingham Road towards west, Thomas Road towards the south and the coast are advised not to leave the area presently as the hazardous fumes from the fire are highly dangerous.
An emergency warning in Gosnells was toned down to Watch and Act as the fire stopped spreading. Individuals residing in the region surrounded by Albany Highway, Tonkin Highway and Ferres Drive were informed about the probable threat to their lives and homes.

Warning issued for Geraldton
An emergency warning was issued the previous night for the Northern section of Karloo in Geraldton before it was lowered to Watch & Act overnight. DFES said that despite the reduced alert level, there still was a threat to lives and homes. At Geraldton, the fire began close to the junction of Abraham Street & Peter Way and was moving in the western direction. At present, Abraham street is closed, and the motorists have been advised not to use the route because of the region’s smoke.
Evacuation of Riverside Gardens Retirement Village
Following the bushfire spread, people residing in Riverside Gardens Retirement Village were evacuated from the region. People were asked to keep themselves updated with the latest available information.
Fire in Wundowie and Red Gully
The fire in Wundowie, which began near the intersection of Great Eastern Highway & Inkpen Road, is currently under control with an Advice level alert. The region was without power supply due to the damaged infrastructure.
Great Eastern highway re-opened on Sunday along with several other roads in the region.
