The Calgary Flames have made a significant move, announcing today the acquisition of defenseman Artem Grushnikov from the Dallas Stars. The trade, which also involves a three-way deal with the New Jersey Devils, sees the Flames adding promising talent to their roster.

In exchange for Grushnikov, the Flames have sent defenseman Chris Tanev to Dallas, while retaining fifty percent of Tanev’s salary. Additionally, Calgary receives a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a conditional third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft from the Stars.

Artem Grushnikov, a native of Voskresensk, Russia, brings a wealth of potential to the Flames. At just 20 years old, Grushnikov has already made a name for himself in the American Hockey League (AHL) as a skilled defenseman with a strong defensive presence. In 44 games this season with the AHL's Texas Stars, Grushnikov has contributed offensively with one goal and four assists while showcasing his physicality with 32 penalty minutes.

Selected in the second round (48th overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft, Grushnikov previously honed his skills in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Hamilton Bulldogs. During his time in the OHL, Grushnikov played a key role in the Bulldogs' success, helping them capture the 2022 Ontario Hockey League Championship and reach the Memorial Cup Finals.

Flames general manager Craig Conroy expressed his excitement about acquiring Grushnikov, stating that the organization had identified him as a valuable addition to their prospect pool for some time. Conroy highlighted Grushnikov's defensive prowess and penalty-killing abilities, emphasizing his potential to contribute to the Flames' success for years to come.

With the addition of Artem Grushnikov and the acquisition of draft picks, the Flames aim to strengthen their roster and build towards future success in the NHL.
