Canadian benchmark index jumps 2.36%, loonie gains 1.49%

The Canadian benchmark index rose by 2.36 per cent on Monday, October 3, and closed at 18,881.19 points. Notably, the energy sector rose significantly by 5.78 per cent, and the base metals sector was up by 4.4 per cent.

Meanwhile, the industrials, information technology, and health care sectors were up by 2.73 per cent, 1.88 per cent, and 1.68 per cent.

Volume Active

The Toronto-Dominion Bank (TSX: TD) was the most volume active stock, and its trading volume was 9.84 million shares. Meanwhile, after Toronto-Dominion was Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX: SU), and its volume was 8.63 million.

Wall Street update

The stock market in the US was in the positive zone, and the NASDAQ Composite gained 2.23 per cent to close at 10,815.43 points.

Meanwhile, the NYSE Composite closed at 13,855.72 points after rising by 2.84 per cent.


The gold prices were up by 2.28 per cent at US$ 1,710.2 per troy ounce. In the crude oil sector, the WTI Futures rose by 5.21 per cent to US$ 83.63 per barrel.

Meanwhile, the Brent Oil Futures were up by 1.02 per cent to US$ 88.86 per barrel.


The CAD/USD was at 0.7339 after gaining 1.49 per cent. The CAD/EUR was also up by 1.17 per cent at 0.7462.
