Equity markets in North America settled in green on Monday. After weaknesses in the early hours of trading, indices moved higher in the second half of the day. The S&P/TSX Composite index traded 0.55% or 103.43 points higher at 18,954.75. The index registered a new all-time high of 18,964.29 in Monday’s intraday session.

Other broader indices also recorded strength, with the S&P/TSX MidCap index increasing by 0.48% to 1,165.66. The S&P/TSX SmallCap index also rose by 0.50% to 760.10.
Telecom index moved up 6.3% on Monday, largely driven by 41.6% surge in telecom major Shaw Communication (SJR.B). Rogers Communications announced that it is acquiring all issued and outstanding Class A and B shares of Shaw for a price of C$40.50 apiece in cash, in a deal amounting to approximately C$20 billion. This reflects a premium of approximately 70% to Shaw’s recent Class B Share price against the Friday’s closing price of C$ 23.90.
Healthcare index of TSX also nudged 4.17% on Monday, led by strong movement in the Cannabis stocks, with Aphria Inc surging ~10.8%, Canopy Growth Corporation bagging ~4.05% and HEXO Corp shares soaring 5.26%.

US Market Update: Stocks on the Wall Street also moved higher with all three largely tracked equity indices of the US market settling in green, with the technology benchmark Nasdaq Composite Index surging by 1.05% to 13,459.71. The S&P 500 index moved 0.65% higher to 3,968.94 and the Dow Jones Industrials added ~175 points or 0.53% to 32,953.46.
Commodity, Currency and Money Market Cues
Gold Contact pared losses of the previous trading session and added 0.55% on Monday to US$1,729.20/oz.
Energy prices recorded two consecutive days of losing streaks, with International crude oil benchmark Brent Oil traded 0.49% lower at US$68.88/bbl, and American Crude WTI settled 0.34% lower to US$65.39/bbl.
Canadian Dollar lose some ground against its US counterpart and settled marginally lower at 0.8014 vs 0.8016 on Friday.
Yield on the US 10-Year Treasury Bond cooled down on Monday with reduction of 1.8% to 1.607%. And, Canadian 10-year Bond Yield also lowered by 2.8% to 1.546% respectively.
