Strength In Energy Stocks Send TSX Composite Index Higher, Up 0.36% To 19,170.

Boosted by energy stocks and positive first quarter earnings update from Canadian National Railway, TSX Composite Index showed an upward momentum on Monday, April 26. However, gains were partially offset after TSX Composite constituent Fortuna Silver Mines announced its plans to buy Roxgold Inc, for about C$ 1 billion, and its shares fell by 12%.  

The S&P/TSX Composite Index settled 0.36% or 68.23 points higher at 19,170.56.

Other broader indices also settled higher, with S&P /TSX 60 trading 0.36% higher to 1,140. The mid-cap and small-cap benchmarks also added 0.36% and 0.75%, respectively. The TSX Venture Index rose by 1.37% to 943.39.

Movers and Laggards on TSX Composite

Active Volume Leaders

Roxgold Inc led the line of most active shares on the TSX on Monday, with 27.88 million, followed by Tetra Bio-Pharma Inc with 16.59 million shares and Enbridge Inc with 9.16 million shares.

Wall Street Update

Stocks in the United States moved into a new record territory as two broader indices, Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500, reported fresh record highs on Monday. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 14,138.78 after increasing 0.87%, while the S&P 500 traded 0.22% higher at 4,189.30. However, price dominated Dow Jones Industrials traded 0.18% lower to 33,98157.

Commodity Update

Gold futures traded in a positive territory and increased to US$ 1,779.20 or 0.26%.

Crude gained some strength again, where Brent Oil improved by 0.72% to US$ 65.65/bbl. WTI Crude Oil closed almost flat at US$ 61.91/bbl.

Forex Market Update

Commodity price dominated Canadian Dollar gain some ground against its US counterpart, as USD/CAD traded 0.72% higher at 1.2397 on Monday,

The US Dollar reported some weakness against the basket of majors on Monday, with Dollar Index trading slightly lower by 0.04% to 90.805, respectively.

Money Market Update

The US 10-year bond retained its momentum and rallied 0.58% to 1.5720 on April 26, 2021.

Canada 10-year bond moved higher and settled 0.43% higher at 1.5320 on Monday.
