Highlights

  • NEXTDC has officially opened its largest data centre to date in Melbourne.
  • The company invested AU$1.5 billion in this 150 MW data centre.

Australian IT management services company NEXTDC (ASX:NXT) has officially opened doors to its third and largest data centre in Melbourne. NEXTDC on Thursday stated that it would cost AU$1.5 billion to fully design and bring this new Melbourne data centre to its operational stage. The company also claims that this third data centre in Melbourne is five times larger than the MCG.

“The Australian digital economy is growing rapidly, accelerating the need for interconnected cloud services, sovereign secured, and sustainable solutions enabled by Tier IV certified facilities to assure business resilience," said NEXTDC’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Craig Scroggie.

"As a market leader, NEXTDC is responding to market demand by expanding our digital infrastructure platform,” he added.

M3 Melbourne data centre details

NEXTDC already has two data centres in Melbourne located in Port Melbourne (M1) and Tullamarine (M2); this new AU$1.2 billion data centre (M3) will be the third on this list. The company has stated that the development of a third and large-scale data centre was essential to address the increased demand for data storage across the globe.

According to the company’s website, M3 Melbourne is located in West Footscray, which is 10 km west of the Melbourne CBD. West Footscray is Melbourne’s designated business district and is only 10 km from Melbourne CBD. This places M3 Melbourne in a close proximity to major electricity substations and other public, telecommunications, and utility infrastructure.

What are NEXTDC’s expectations from M3 Melbourne?

  • Through the M3 Melbourne data centre, NEXTDC anticipates that its enterprise and government customers will be able to grow their crucial infrastructure platforms. This 150 MW data centre will also establish a new availability zone for data storage solutions in the Melbourne market.
  • The company expects M3 Melbourne to create a critical operations hub where NEXTDC’s customers can place and manage their mission-critical offices and operation centres as well as their collaborative spaces.
