WHC, WPL, AVZ: Three ASX best performers in the first quarter of 2022

The ASX 200 gained nearly 1% in the first quarter of 2022, rising by an impressive 6.4% to end the month of March at 7,499.6 points. The quarter was fairly challenging for the market due to Russia-Ukraine conflict and rising oil prices. While a good number of shares supported the domestic market, some rose more than others during the quarter.

On this note, let’s discuss how much returns these three ASX 200 shares delivered during the first quarter ending 31 March 2022.

Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC)

Whitehaven Coal is known to be Australia’s biggest independent coal miner It is involved in development and operation of coal mines in New South Wales and Queensland.

The shares of the mineral explorer gave a return of over 50% in the first quarter (4 January to 31 March). The share price gained following increase in demand for coal due to Russia-Ukraine conflict. The coal prices soared to record highs during the period.

Woodside Petroleum Ltd (ASX:WPL)

Woodside Petroleum is an energy sector company with a global presence with regards to its key oil and gas assets. It has been known for operating in the hydrocarbon exploration, development, production, transportation and marketing segments.

The shares of the mineral explorer gave a return of nearly 42% during the first quarter. The rise in oil prices beyond US$120 a barrel to their highest levels since 2008 boosted the rise of the stock.

AVZ Minerals Ltd (ASX:AVZ)

AVZ Minerals is a mineral exploration group. It primarily explores for lithium, tin, tantalum, and cesium deposits.

The shares of the mineral explorer gave a return of nearly 41% during the first quarter. The company has largely gained on account of rising lithium prices and positive developments at its Manono Lithium and Tin Project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The stock was added to the ASX 200 at the quarterly rebalance in March.
